Art & Design Glossary
Let's make sure we understand one another.
Primary Design – The main focal point of the tee design.
Secondary Design – A complimentary component of the design that adds depth and interest.
The 5 Design Elements
(Design Elements is a collective term that encompasses the following terms)
1. Type Treatment – How the text will be designed. Examples include “blocky”, “Serif”, “Vintage”, etc.
2. Icon – Specific subject matter.
3. Texture – A process of adding additional feel. Examples include “distressed”, “jersey”, “worn in”
4. Pattern – A repeating image, line, or shape.
5. Flourish – A flow of swirls, waves, or lines.
Additional Terminology
Colorway – Refers to the combination of art color(s) and product color.
Colors – Refers to the number of colors used in the design.
Sketch – A pre-design visual guide to the design project.
Layer – How the design elements lay on each other. Pertaining to icons, flourishes, type, and patterns.
Layout – The way all the design elements are put together and presented on the garment.
Revision – An edit to the design that involves text, textures, color ways, or design size.
Revisions do not create a new Primary Design.
Modifications - A complete make over of the design. To the point it could be a re-work from the beginning.
